01

The problem

A barbershop chain running three Essex shops on walk-ins only. Nobody could tell a customer how long the wait was, and the owner could not tell how busy a shop was without standing in it.

Customers regularly walked in, saw a full waiting area and left again without the team ever knowing. Staffing was set from last week's memory, because there was nothing else to set it from.

What we built

An app that measures a real shop: every visit, every quiet hour, and what a message to customers is actually worth.

Arrivals and departures detected at the door
Customers carrying the app are counted automatically. Staff phones are excluded and duplicate signals removed, so a visit means a visit.
One dashboard across every shop
The owner can see every shop from any of them, which used to mean being there in person.
Busy hours, by day and by hour
The first hour after opening turned out to be the busiest of the week. No till and no diary would ever have shown that.
Messages to customers, with the result measured
Every broadcast is compared against the same two hours over the previous four weeks, so the owner sees what it was worth rather than just that it was sent.
Nothing counted without permission
Only customers who installed the app and chose to share their location. No estimates and no modelling anywhere in the figures.
03

What it did

  • Live across three Essex shops, visible from any one of them
  • Every visit measured at the door rather than estimated, staff excluded and duplicates removed
  • Staffing set from measured demand by day and hour, for the first time
  • iPhone app on the App Store, with a manager dashboard on the web
It's given us visibility we never had before. We can see exactly what's happening across all three shops in real time.
